I downloaded the game but get a "Failure to launch program" message and can't install it. Anyone have any suggestions?

The only the "failure to launch" messages that I've seen related to problems with the C++ libraries and an internet search doesn't show anything different.
So, I'd reinstall the C++ redistributables and see if that fixes the problem.
Here's a link to an old post with links to the libraries. A 32-bit system needs the (x86) files, a 64-bit system needs both the (x86) and (x64) files. If you're not sure what you have then open "System Information" (press the Windows Key and Pause).

Trying to install the game and it starts opening dozens of IEs. The GCD file association shows adobe acrobat to open it. What should opern it?

Hi rtg143,
please read and follow the readme.txt file how to install and activate the giveaways.
You must not touch the GCD file. Only the setup file.Posted 9 years ago # -

Obviously that should not be. You might want to do a mal-ware scan including Internet Explorer add-ons & helpers. Perhaps

That also should not be the case. Perhaps at one time you selected the Acrobat reader to open a gcd file in Windows open with dialog? Since it starts with the letter A, it's often at the top of the list of programs that you can choose from.
Best advice is [maybe after a mal-ware scan] do as graylox suggests, & follow the directions in the readme.txt file included with each GOTD download.

I've installed many games from here in the years that I've been a member. I do use the readme file for instructions. This is actually on my daughters PC. She doesn't usually install anything. When I was at her place, I installed Riddles of the past but I used a zip opener file to get it to run. It tried to open several IEs too.
I've installed it on mine with no problem. I should have mentioned that in the first place.
