Vovsoft OCR Reader is an image to text converter program that allows you to extract text from PNG, JPEG, TIFF, WEBP, and BMP files using Optical Character Recognition. This software is basically a text reader from image.

While there are many OCR tools available online, some prefer a dedicated desktop tool instead. The best part of the program is that the conversion is done completely offline. You are the only controller of your private data. No image file is sent to internet in any case.

This small and lightweight OCR tool can easily digitize image files and scanned documents on your laptop or desktop computer. It can scan documents using TWAIN and WIA scanner protocols. This application utilizes Tesseract OCR engine, which supports more than 100 languages. In order to increase accuracy, it uses a neural network (LSTM) based OCR engine which provides line recognition, but also can recognize character patterns.

You can create a selection box to recognize a specific area in your document. To do this, all you have to do is click on the image and drag the mouse to create a rectangle. Thus, the program will recognize only the region you selected. This will provide a more accurate conversion and speed up the process.

Does what it says on the tin. You can open a jpg and extract the text. It's a shame that it doesn't open pdf's, but you can convert pdf's to jpg first and then extract the text, although that's a bit round-about way of doing it.

* can only scan images (JPG & BMP)--no PDFs
* reads from left-to-right, ignoring obvious columnar arrangement, and displays the separate columns interlaced
* error while trying to save the conversion as a Word document (.doc--I can't tell which version of Word)
* scanning my document one-column at a time works much better---just more inconvenient
* has difficulty extrapolating the English words when one or two letters are off: PErSONAL becomes PEKSONAL
'Liverpoo l' becomes 'Liverpoo !' I can expect some difficulties with non-standard English...but am not impressed
with the handling of standard American English...or their comparison dictionary (if they have one).

Summary: just a bit better than transcribing by hand.

Not very accurate with a jpeg of screen text.

Worked quite well, and only took a few seconds..

TXT and PDF saved okay, but the Word doc stated it was corrupted (viewed in Word, Open Office and LibraOffice)

Would be nice if there were a 'Previous File' option.

Thanks for offering to test,
Nick...

Again, a program that worked perfectly, & I will gladly test this & make remarks.

Richard Woodley,
You could just make a screenshot of it and try it? Be creative ;-)

txtim, This is still a good choice for me as I have software that will convert PDF files to jpgs, so just an extra step there.
